Blake Shelton is sweet on tweeting. Almost daily, no matter how busy he is, he whips out his iPhone, punches in messages of 140 characters or less, and—bam!—his close to 600,000 Twitter followers know exactly what’s on his mind.
Mostly, the Oklahoma-born country star makes jokes. “I’m so drunk right now I just tried to change the channel on my aquarium …” reads one of the more printable entries. He taps out an “I’m so drunk …” missive nearly every day, or its equally sozzled cousin, “I’m so hungover. …” Shelton has said that execs at his record label have expressed concern about some of his tweets, but they’re meant to amuse. “It’s just a way to say something ridiculous. Yeah, I drink a lot,” says the singer, whose beverage of choice is Bacardi rum mixed with Crystal Light, “but I’m not drunk every night.”
These days, it’s not just his Twitter followers who appreciate Shelton and his irreverent sense of humor. The country singer gained millions of new fans while coaching on NBC’s hit musical competition The Voice this past spring. His wedding in May to singer Miranda Lambert cemented their status as the latest in a long line of country-music royal couples and landed them on the covers of Us Weekly and People Country. His summer smash, “Honey Bee,” is his fourth consecutive No. 1 single, and his new album, Red River Blue, rocketed to No. 1 on Billboard’s country and top 200 album charts in its first week of release.
It’s been a big year for Shelton, but then so was 2010, when he was named the Country Music Association’s male vocalist of the year and inducted into Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. “Ten years into my career, it’s starting to bust wide open,” says the 35-year-old, who found success in 2001 with his first album but saw sales dip later in the decade. “I’m glad it’s happening this way, because if it had happened earlier, I don’t know that I would appreciate it like I do now.”
Shelton is discussing his good fortune while lazing on a couch backstage at NBC’s Today show in New York, where he has just wowed the crowd in an outdoor mini-concert. His long legs—he’s between 6-4 and 6-5 even without his alligator-skin cowboy boots—are stretched out in front of him, and he’s sipping from a bottle of water. He is loose-limbed, loose of tongue, and lacking pretensions. “My life has been an open book, for better or for worse,” he says.

Oklahoma country music and reality TV star Blake Shelton will sing the famed title track for the upcoming remake of the musical drama “Footloose,” reports EW.com.
Kenny Loggins memorably recorded the title track to the original 1984 film.
Judging from the trailer and EW’s account, the remake, due in theaters Oct. 14, follows closely the dance steps of the first “Footloose,” which starred Kevin Bacon as a Chicago teen who moves to a rural Southern community that has a law prohibiting dancing.Shelton, an Ada native and Tishomingo resident, is an interesting choice to cut the theme song since the original film is based on real-life events that happened in another small southern Oklahoma town: Elmore City.
In 1980, Elmore City students convinced the school board to let them organize the school’s first prom, despite an 80-year-old city ordinance banning public dancing. The Oklahoma farming community marked the 30th anniversary of the first prom last year.
In the remake, newcomer Kenny Wormald plays the lead role of Ren, which made Bacon a star. Playing his love interest Ariel (the role originated by Lori Singer) is another country singer/reality TV star, Julianne Hough.
Dennis Quaid plays stern minister Rev. Moore, played by John Lithgow in the original. Miles Teller plays Ren’s pal Willard, whose dancing boots the late Chris Penn filled back in ’84.
A self-professed fan of the original, Craig Brewer (music-oriented indie films “Hustle & Flow,” “Black Snake Moan”) co-wrote and directed the new version.
Shelton won’t be the only celebrity coach from the hit reality TV show “The Voice” to contribute to the “Footloose” soundtrack: Cee Lo Green and Kenny Wayne Shepherd will collaborate on “Walkin’ Blues,” according to EW.com.

Blake Shelton’s brand-new single, ‘God Gave Me You,’ shows a softer side of the newly-married country superstar. The tune, originally written and recorded by Christian rocker Dave Barnes, could almost be considered a belated wedding gift to Blake’s new bride, Miranda Lambert.
“‘God Gave Me You’ is an important song for me for this record,” Blake tells The Boot of the second song released from his upcoming album, ‘Red River Blue.’ “I had flown into Dallas, Texas and got into my truck and was driving back to Oklahoma … It’s no secret, Miranda and I have had our ups and downs over the years and this was definitely at a low point at our relationship. But I heard that song come on the radio — for whatever reason I was flipping through stations and landed on a contemporary Christian station, and that song came on and I almost had to pull the truck over. It was one of those moments for me where I felt like I was hearing that song at that moment for a reason.
“I actually got on iTunes and downloaded the song as I was driving home,” the singer continues. “I probably listened to it 20 times before I got home that day, and I called [my producer] Scott Hendricks and said, ‘Man, I found a song I want to cut.’ There was never a question, I never looked back after that. I knew it was going to be a pivotal song for the album.”
‘Red River Blue’ is due in stores July 12. Its first single, ‘Honey Bee,’ is the fastest-rising song of the Oklahoma native’s career, jetting to No. 1 on the country charts and staying there for four consecutive weeks (and counting!).

Miranda Lambert is stepping into new husband Blake Shelton’s territory.
On next Wednesday’s season finale of NBC’s hit singing contest, “The Voice,” Lambert will perform a duet with the finalist who was on Shelton’s team, Dia Frampton.
Lambert, a Grammy winner for her single “The House That Built Me,” said she was “thrilled” to be part of “The Voice.”
“It’s been a joy watching my husband grow so attached to his team. Truthfully, I am a little jealous that I am not a coach myself. I can’t wait to be a part of it,” she said.
Country superstars Lambert and Shelton were married last month.
“The Voice” also features Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5?s Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green as coaches to their own groups of would-be pop stars.
The other finalists competing with Frampton are Javier Colon, Beverly McClellan and Vicci Martinez. The four will perform next Tuesday, with the viewers’ choice to be announced on the finale the following night. The winner gets a record contract and a $100,000 prize.
